After graduating from high school, he attended Arizona State University on an athletic scholarship, where he started at strong safety for the Sun Devils and won the Dick Butkus Award in 1998.
In 2002, Pat left college to join the U.S. Army and became a Special Forces operative. He was deployed to Afghanistan and Iraq, where he spent 72 days in the mountains of Afghanistan before sustaining fatal injuries on April 22, 2004. Pat's death was a devastating blow to his family and friends.
